Armory Show 2013: Focus on Simone Leigh

NEW YORK—Gavlak Gallery is exhibiting works by Simone Leigh in the Focus USA section of the Armory Show. Leigh’s Surrealist works are defined by contrast—dark sculptural figures that de-emphasize the eyes and focus on the lips and mouth are embellished with tight clusters of bright, rose bud-like spirals.

On her website, the Brooklyn-based artist describes her work as “an object-based on-going exploration of black female subjectivity. She creates sculpture, videos and installations informed by her interest in African art, ethnographic research, feminism and performance.”

The Armory Show is on view from March 7 to March 10, 2013 at Piers 92 (the Modern Show) and 94 (the main Contemporary Show).
