NEW YORK—Standing alone in a small space at Paula Cooper Gallery, this untitled sculpture by Joel Shapiro is optimally framed. The object appears to be an abstract interpretation of a mannequin bust. The artist’s restrained hand is evidenced in its silhouette, and the texture of its planed surfaces.
In 2010, the gallery devoted an exhibition to Shapiro’s early works from 1969 to 1979.
The sculpture is on view at Paula Cooper Gallery through Feb. 25, 2012.

I recently discovered a young Polish painter by the name of Pawel Przewlocki, whose acrylic paintings strongly resemble Shapiro’s more ubiquitous geo-figured sculptures. Great work by two great artists who are perfect strangers!
